About & other projects

Photography

Mostly birds, mostly solar-powered.

Hobbies

What else takes up the time.

Growing your own

A vegetable patch and the occasional stab at self-sufficiency, somewhere between hobby and environmental conscience.

Stained glass

An on-and-off hobby with lead, solder, and copper foil — cutting and joining coloured glass the old-fashioned way. More patience-testing than the photography, in a good way.

Electric driving

Went electric a while back, mostly charged overnight from the battery the solar panels keep topped up. Part practical decision, part extension of the same low-carbon nerdiness as the panels themselves.

Solar power

18 panels on a south- and west-facing roof, going in at the end of 2021, plus enough battery storage to shift most of the day's usage onto the cheap overnight rate. I like tracking it rather more than is strictly necessary — the system beat its first-year generation estimate by 17%, and there's a spreadsheet to prove it.

Other things built and maintained.

Protein Sequence Dot Plot Analyzer

Compares two protein sequences as a customizable dot plot, showing regions of similarity above a chosen threshold. Comes with its own user manual.

PeptideMapper for Multiple Sequences

The multi-sequence sibling of PeptideMapper: upload a multi-FASTA file and compare digested peptides across several protein sequences at once, spotting which peptides are shared and which are unique to one sequence.

PeptideMapper

A protein digestion and peptide-mapping tool: paste in a sequence, choose a protease (trypsin, LysC, ArgC, GluC...), and get back the resulting peptides as an annotated table, with custom text labels, colors and markers placeable at any position. Built for proteomics work, with Claude doing the implementing.

ZWITTER

Amino acid playing cards, designed as a lockdown outreach project — the amino acids are the faces, and stick, space-filling and skeletal structures make up the suits (yes, there's a "Jokerine"). Started out too fiendish even for biochemists, and got reworked into something closer to an actual pub game.

Dysgu Cymraeg

A suite of Welsh language learning apps, built together with Jane.

Occasional notes.

Bird photography: the beginning

I got into wildlife and bird photography at about the same time as photography in general — helped along by Jane's genuinely encyclopaedic knowledge of birds,…
